A messy office Christmas party followed by seaside coffee and cake in Aberdeen (Rousse)
A mixture of colleagues from all stages of my career came to the staff Christmas party. These included: my old boss JH; the wife and eldest daughter of my old office-mate SM; current colleagues DB and LD; a tall, skinny, … Continue reading
Hyacinth birthday cake (Rousse)
I was allergic to hyacinths so why would anyone think that I would like a hyacinth cake to celebrate my birthday? By the time I had extracted the plant from the plate, all that remained were a few dry crumbs … Continue reading

Outdoors baker is jealous wife (Rousse)
BG was not happy to hear that I was about to climb into bed with JG in front of all the party guests. ‘What if something happens?’, she complained. ‘Nothing will’, I assured her – because, in reality, I was … Continue reading
Christmas cake complications (Rousse)
It was meant to be a simple lunch at my parents’ house, but the complications began as soon as I invited the others to the table. First I noticed that my former colleague AT failed to turn up. Then the … Continue reading

A storybook bedroom with spiral staircase (Rousse)
My husband and I snuggled down together in a bedroom that could have featured on the pages of a children’s storybook. The walls were papered with jolly seaside scenes, traditional toys were scattered on the floor, and ornamental mechanical soldiers, … Continue reading

Shrove Tuesday drop scone pancake substitute (Rousse)
We decided to host a cake stand at the welcome event for new students. Since it was Shrove Tuesday we wanted to offer pancakes. However, this was impractical. Drop scones would have to serve as substitutes.

Forgive, forget, and return to the fold (Rousse)
I kept quiet when XYZ entered the room carrying a tray of home-made cakes. She offered one to each person as if she had never been away. They each happily accepted a cake and carried on their friendly chat. Everyone … Continue reading

Conference confusion (Rousse)
I was regretting my decision to accept the invitation to chair the conference, especially now that the ‘man in charge’ was obviously ignoring the programme and directing the delegates keen to hear the plenary session into a field. This was … Continue reading
Wedding gatecrash (Rousse)
My new flat was somewhere near Arthur’s Seat in a run-down corner of Edinburgh. I struggled to cycle there due to forgetting the route and thus turned a short ride into a mammoth journey. When I saw a coach come … Continue reading
A course in Corbridge – with popsicles (Rousse)
The venue for the course was the sitting room of my (dead) grandmother’s house in Corbridge. It was exactly as it was the last time that I had last visited it in the 1980s. The brown curtains still hung at … Continue reading
