SC warned me about the jewellery thieves of Pitlochry. They came from out of town, armed with nothing but a strong grip. Their modus operandi was to force a victim against a wall, reach for their hands, tug off all … Continue reading

Conference confusion (Rousse)

I was regretting my decision to accept the invitation to chair the conference, especially now that the ‘man in charge’ was obviously ignoring the programme and directing the delegates keen to hear the plenary session into a field. This was … Continue reading

Back to Birmingham for the finals (Rousse)

Why had I volunteered to resit the final exams of my undergraduate degree? There was no need for me to do this, and I didn’t stand a chance of passing. The only benefit of dragging myself back to Birmingham was … Continue reading

An unwelcome extra in a New York fruit salad (Rousse)

JG brought me a delicious-looking fruit salad all the way from New York. When I took a mouthful I bit straight into something brittle. There was a shard of glass amongst the fruit! We needed to hold this as evidence … Continue reading

Grow your own pearl bracelet on the Isle of Skye (Rousse)

After I lost TPR in LIDL I popped down to the beach on the Isle of Skye to watch the opening Edinburgh Fringe performance. The “comedy” was truly terrible. At the interval I left discreetly. I would spend the rest … Continue reading
