AirBnB in a double decker bus (Rousse)
We were trying to persuade my mother to rent out the static caravan in her garden as an AirBnB. We took her on a bus ride to show her how this could be done: the bus itself had been converted … Continue reading

A caravan, a conference, and carbonara (Rousse)
I elected to sleep in the static caravan, along with the students. However, I had hoped that I would still be allowed to use the bathroom in the house. When the students told me that they used the caravan shower, … Continue reading
VIP wedding guests on the Thames (Rousse)
KJD invited me and TPR to her son J and K’s wedding. Since we had never before met KJD, nor any of the rest of the family for that matter, we were especially honoured to be seated next to the … Continue reading
From the Greek massacre to rioting on the streets of Edinburgh (Rousse)
G and LE started a fashion for building houses half way up the crags of Holyrood Park. My parents planned to do the same. In the meantime we lived in a small caravan in a car park next to Holyrood … Continue reading

David Mitchell’s ancestors and Rabelais (Rousse)

Friday night in the caravan (Rousse)
This was the most depressing of Friday nights. We were packed into a static caravan the size of a railway carriage, not far from Quartermile. I’d been here before when it had been used as emergency accommodation for undergraduates at … Continue reading

Simon Le Bon leaves Yasmin and takes new lover to Aberdeen caravan hideaway (Rousse)
Simon Le Bon left his wife Yasmin – for me! Our first trip together was to Aberdeen beach to visit the Le Bon family’s caravan. I had expected it to be a luxurious trailer. Instead I discovered a tiny old-fashioned … Continue reading

Belle holidays with The Monkees
The caravan was extremely small considering at least two of The Monkees had joined us for a holiday. To escape the cramped quarters, I went on a tiny train deep into the hillside for an “authentic taste of 19th century … Continue reading

Belle in Wonderland
I saw the smallest caravan in the world. It was just big enough for a table that had two full-size custard tarts on it. Then I survived two murder attempts and found lots of mini Easter eggs under the TV.
