Val McDermid invited me to her celebration at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. I was so honoured to be asked, especially when I learnt that it was a small, intimate affair at which only about 20 people would be present. The only other person on that guest list that I knew was DM.
Just before the presentation I left the main room to retrieve my iPhone so that I would have it with me to take photos of the ceremony. Then I lost my way back again!
I followed the sound of ceremonial bagpipes thinking that this was for Val. The music, however, was for the entertainment of chartered surveyors at a networking event in a different room. Here platefuls of delicious vegetables were being served. (Although not a chartered surveyor, CS was in attendance.)
By the time I made it back to the event for Val the ceremony was over, and I was in disgrace for missing it.
